The Pomeranian is named after Pomerania, the area of northeastern Europe that is now part of Poland and western Germany. These dogs were bred down from their much bigger, burlier cousins, who were powerful spitz-type sled dogs of the Artic. They come in a whole spectrum of hues and patterns: Orange and red, black, black and tan, blue, blue and tan, chocolate, chocolate and tan, cream, cream sable, brindle, and white. Poms that are white with patches of any other color are called “parti-colored.”
These fox-faced dogs, with their sweet, dark almond-shapes eyes and noses make a great family pet because of their charming personality. They are alert, intelligent, and confident. And get along with everybody, including cats. Pomeranians are easily trained and active but can be exercised with indoor play or short walks. They make a great family companion.
